Private tutoring represents a real investment, and it's entirely reasonable to ask whether it's worth it. The honest answer is: it depends — on the quality of the tutor, the student's engagement and the clarity of the goals. Here's what the evidence actually shows.
What the EEF evidence shows
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) — the UK's leading independent education research charity, whose Teaching and Learning Toolkit synthesises evidence from more than 2,950 robust studies — concludes that high-quality tutoring, when well-aligned to classroom teaching, can produce up to five months of additional academic progress. The South Farnham Teaching Hub summarises this evidence clearly: the effect is particularly strong for disadvantaged learners and for students working with specific academic gaps.
When tutoring works best
The EEF's evidence identifies three conditions for effective tutoring: there is a specific gap to address (rather than general supplementary coverage); the student is engaged and willing; and there is clear communication between the tutor, student and parent. A meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Educational Research (Zhang and Liu, 2022) — using a three-level model across multiple studies — confirmed that private tutoring interventions have a meaningful effect on academic achievement, particularly when sessions are regular and sustained.
Accessibility matters
For too long, private tutoring has been available predominantly to families who can afford premium in-person rates. Online tutoring has changed this equation significantly. The Sutton Trust (2023) found that 27% of 11–16 year-olds in the UK have now received private tutoring — a figure that has grown substantially with the rise of online platforms. Wider access to more tutors at more price points means that quality support no longer has to come with a prohibitive price tag.
